Stepfamilies and Money: Part One

A new Stepmom Circles Podcast is ready! When I first began researching stepfamily life so I could write my book, I came across Dr. Margorie Engel. At the time she was the president of the Stepfamily Association of America, which is now the National Stepfamily Resource Center and we talked then about stepfamily money issues. I recently interviewed Dr. Engel again and we talked for hours about all the things that stepfamilies face when it comes to money: saving for college, insurance, estate planning and much, much more. This podcast is the first in a series of three. She also generously gave us documents to help guide our discussions of these topics with our families.

Visit my blog at to download a PDF with Dr. Engel's packet of information. I hope this starts some fruitful conversations between you and your family. Good luck!

    Hi Jacque,

Yet another phenomenal podcast - thank you! I so look forward to rest of the series. I must say, I pray that Dr. Engel or you addresses the complexities of inheritance in more depth. I am a custodial stepmother of 3 girls now thriving adults (well, the 22 year old is in her last year of college and we expect her to fly as well!) But, in the 15 years that I have stepped their mother has never contributed financially; in fact she wasn’t there emotionally, physically or spiritually in any consistent manner - quite hostile in fact. However, now that she is back, I am not receiving the reciprocation of all of my hard work and thanks to you and others research, I understand why - so that’s pretty good. Also, probably because we are currently one of those families with decent finances but not exorbitant amounts, I want to leave my estate to my son (i.e. retirement, life insurance, etc.) Is that selfish or normal for a custodial stepmom in my situation? Thanks for listening…
